Honouring Our World War II Veterans

It has been an extraordinary and humbling experience over these past couple of weeks to honour our World War II Veterans at ceremonies across Lambton-Kent-Middlesex. Veterans are receiving a unique lapel pin marking the 75th anniversary of the start of the Second World War along with commemorative certificates from the Prime Minister, Minister of Veteran’s Affairs and myself. The Veterans and their families have been so very appreciative of the honour. The entire country thanks all veterans for their service, dedication and courage. We also remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice during the war and our veterans who have passed away. If you know of a WWII Veteran who has not yet received a lapel pin and certificate, please contact my Strathroy office at 519-245-6561.

Anti-Terrorism Act

As we all know, we’re still dealing with serious threats to our country that our government will deal with head on. The terrorist attacks of October 22nd in our nation’s capital and two days prior in Quebec, certainly changed the reality of threats to Canadian security. Clearly Canada is not immune to the threat of terrorism. Our government has introduced the Anti-Terrorism Act, which includes new measures that are both strong and practical, to enhance our country’s security and to keep Canadians safe.
In line with measures taken by our allies, we’re taking additional action to ensure our law enforcement and national security agencies can for example:

* counter those who advocate terrorism;
* prevent terrorist travel and the efforts of those who seek to use Canada as a recruiting ground;
* and disrupt planned attacks on Canadian soil.

More Help for Small Businesses

As I say time and time again, small businesses are the backbone of our local economies. Prime Minister Harper recognizes that as well. He recently announced our government’s intent to make changes to the Canada Small Business Financing Program, which will allow more small businesses to apply and will make larger loans to purchase or improve their land or buildings. These measures will enhance the ability of small businesses across Lambton-Kent-Middlesex and right across the country to grow and create more jobs. The 2015 Tax Guide

Every year, I prepare a tax guide booklet for my constituents in order to make sure you and your family can take advantage of all the tax saving measures passed by our Conservative government. The booklet should be arriving in your mailbox any day now. Please take a moment to flip through the pages of the guide as it provides a wealth of information as we all prepare to file our 2014 income taxes. Our government is proud to have cut taxes 160 times since forming government in 2006, saving the average family about $3,400 a year. And thanks to our government’s new tax savings initiatives brought forward for families, they will see additional savings above the $3,400. These include the:
1. New family tax cut (income-splitting)
2. The Expanded Child Care Expense Deduction
3. The Expanded Universal Child Care Benefit and
4. The Expanded Children’s Fitness and Arts Tax Credit

Much more information about these new tax measures can be found at /helping-canadian-families/

Black History Month

February is Black History Month with the theme this year being “Proud of Our History.” Every year, Canadians are invited to participate in Black History Month festivities and events that honour the legacy of black Canadians, past and present. We take time to celebrate the many achievements and contributions of black Canadians who, throughout history, have done so much to make Canada the culturally diverse, compassionate and prosperous nation it is today.
