Remembering D-Day

June 6, 2016

On June 6, 1944, Canadians landed on Juno Beach in Normandy to liberate occupied France. The Royal Canadian Navy and the Royal Canadian Air Force attacked targets while 14,000 Canadian troops stormed the beach amidst enemy fire, and over 450 Canadians parachuted inland to engage the enemy before dawn. Canadians fought courageously and seized three enemy positions along the shoreline. Victory on D-Day did not come without a cost; 340 Canadians sacrificed their lives during the attack, while many others still carry the events of that day in their hearts and minds. Today, 72 years after the events of D-Day, Canadians everywhere take time to remember and honour the sacrifice that so many Canadians made in the name of freedom, democracy, and the rule of law around the world.
