No Room for Politics when it comes to Canadian Security

January 13, 2016

The safety and security of Canadians is being put at risk by yet another stunning example of Prime Minister Trudeau’s disdain for Parliament and indifference to meaningful consultation.

Last week, Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale announced on television the formation of a committee of MPs to oversee the sensitive work of our security and intelligence-gathering professionals. For 30 years, Canada has had an independent committee of experts providing oversight to these highly trained and conscientious public servants. In all that time, there has never been a hint of politics, security breaches or leaks of confidential information. Unfortunately, the same thing cannot be said of the political Ottawa culture over the past few years.

The Prime Minister had also committed during the campaign to allow members of committees to elect their own chairs. By appointing David McGuinty (brother of former Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty) as chair, it appears the Prime Minister has broken yet another campaign promise to Canadians.

Today, I am calling on the Prime Minister to set aside his intentions to establish this committee until Parliament is reconvened and there is an opportunity to have meaningful consultation with Parliamentarians, Canadians and experts in the field.

He committed to all Canadians at the opening of Parliament to have open debate and consultation. Sadly, once again he is not keeping his word to be open and transparent with Canadians.
