Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MP Bev Shipley named Chair of Agriculture Committee
October 25, 2013-STRATHROY-Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MP Bev Shipley has been named Chair of the influential Agriculture Committee in Parliament. The appointment was made yesterday, in Ottawa.
Bev’s experience and commitment to agriculture is impressive. He spent over 20 years as a farmer, expanding the family farm to include cash crops and purebred dairy cattle. His committee work in Ottawa has included membership on the standing committee on Agriculture, Industry and Technology, Transportation, Veteran’s Affairs, Public Accounts and International Trade.
However, Bev also knows that the best way to find out what concerns farmers have is to get out in the field with them. While home in his huge, rural riding of Lambton-Kent-Middlesex, Bev will often be seen pulling into a farmer’s driveway, heading out to the barn, getting on the combine or sitting down with them for a cup of coffee and a chat. He is a staunch supporter of agriculture and looks forward to continuing to serve not only his rural constituents, but farmers right across Canada.
In accepting the appointment yesterday, Bev said “It is a privilege to be selected as Chair of the Federal Agriculture Committee. I believe our farmers are as efficient as any in the world. They must be supported as they compete against the trade tariffs and the treasuries of our competing trading partners, giving them the tools and encouragement for innovation and competition.”
Bev’s experience on the International Trade Committee positions him well in his new role as Agriculture Chair as the Government moves forward with the implementation of the Canada EU Trade Agreement. (CETA) and further expending trade around the world.
