Federal Funding Announced for the Sir Arthur Currie Project

December 18, 2013-STRATHROY–Lambton-Kent-Middlesex M.P. Bev Shipley has announced funding today that will allow the Strathroy Middlesex Museum to move forward with a historic project which has been in the works for years. The federal funding for the General Sir Arthur Currie Memorial Project has been approved.

The funding amount of $50,000 is being made available through Veterans Affairs’ Community War Memorial Project. This approval is the result of a lot of hard work from the Township of Strathroy-Caradoc, members of the Sir Arthur Currie Memorial Project Steering Committee, the fundraising efforts of local cadets and many individuals in Strathroy-Caradoc. Bev is pleased to have been able to liason between Veterans Affairs and the township, to ensure the funding was approved.

“This is a part of the history of Strathroy-Caradoc that we are very proud of, and I have been so happy to see many residents coming together to ensure we embrace this local hero” said Shipley. John Sargeant, with the Sir Arthur Currie Memorial Project Steering Committee says “we owe a real debt of gratitude to the Federal Government and Army Cadet League of Canada for their help with this project. We are so pleased we are now able to finish it.”

A statue of Canadian WW1 General Sir Arthur Currie, who was born in Strathroy-Caradoc, will be erected in the civic centre of Strathroy in 2014 to commemorate the centenary of the Great War (1914-1918).
