Continued Support for Canada’s Seniors

Since coming into office, the financial security and well-being of Canada’s seniors has been a priority for me and our Government. In all, we are providing almost $2.8 billion in annual tax relief to Canada’s seniors and pensioners through landmark tax saving initiatives like pension income splitting.

Keeping Taxes Low for Your Family

While governments at home and around the globe raise taxes, I’ve been pleased to support measures which have cut taxes. Lower taxes support economic growth and job creation, and allow you and your family to keep more of your hard-earned money. So far we’ve cut taxes over 160 times and reduced federal taxes to their lowest level in 50 years. And when we’ve balanced the budget next year, you can look forward to even lower taxes.

Canadian Middle Class Incomes Highest in the World

While federal opposition leaders have tried to create a middle class income crisis, a new study by the New York Times seems to lay waste to such claims. The study by the NYT says quite the opposite and concludes that middle class incomes in Canada actually rose by 20% over the last decade and are now the highest in the world – moving ahead of the United States for the first time in 35 years.

Did You Know?
-Since coming to office in 2006, our government has been diligent in our efforts to reform the senate. We introduced a number of Bills over the past eight years to do just that, but each time the opposition parties voted against those Bills. More than a year ago we asked the Supreme Court of Canada for an opinion on the constitutionality of reforming the senate or abolishing it altogether without having to have a very divisive constitutional debate. Many of you will well remember the bitter divide which resulted from the Meech Lake and Charlottetown Accords. Unfortunately the SCC has ruled against our request and there is way to reform the senate in way to make it accountable, equal and effective. And the SCC ruled the only way to abolish the senate is with the unanimous consent of the provinces, a number of which have been very clear their desire to keep the senate. For our government, the court’s decision was disappointing.
-The town of Strathroy has lost an icon in the world of education. Dr. Mary Wright, a visionary educator, advocate for children and pioneering female academic, passed away last week at the age of 98.

Until next time.
