Today, our Conservative government passed the Home Renovation Tax Credit in the House of Commons. This ensures that Canadian families who make qualifying upgrades to their homes before February 1st, 2010 will get the credit on this year’s tax return.
Other important measures our government passed today and Michael Ignatieff voted against and that are crucial to helping Canadians cope with the effects of the global recession include:
- First Time Home Buyers Tax Credit to assist first-time homebuyers with the costs associated with buying a home, such as legal fees;
- Enhanced Working Income Tax Benefit to help ensure low-income workers are better off financially by remaining or becoming employed;
- Extended tax deferral available to farmers in drought and flood regions to help farmers cope with extreme weather conditions;
- Tariff Relief to make it easier for Canadian businesses to import and export goods by improving the rules on temporary cargo containers.
Michael Ignatieff voted against all of them in his selfish pursuit of forcing a wasteful, opportunistic election. Once again, Michael Ignatieff has proven that he’s clearly not in it for Canadians. Today, his party voted against key tax measures in our Economic Action Plan. He voted against the recession-fighting Home Renovation Tax Credit that’s helping not just homeowners, but everyone from lumber producers to construction workers, as well as hardware and home building supply stores.
We want to fight the recession. Michael Ignatieff wants to fight the recovery.
Today he made that crystal clear.
