Ottawa
– The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of State (Agriculture), and Lambton—Kent—Middlesex MP Bev Shipley, announced today up to $1,475 in federal government support for a project in Strathroy, Ontario to honour Veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
“By supporting the restoration of cenotaphs and monuments across the country, the Government of Canada is ensuring sacred areas of commemoration reflect the respect and dignity befitting for Canada’s Veterans,” said Minister Blackburn. “These memorials show our Veterans that we will keep the torch of remembrance lit for generations to come.”
The Township of Adelaide Metcalfe will receive funding to restore the Metcalfe Cenotaph. Built on the Metcalfe Central School property, this memorial is dedicated to those who made the ultimate sacrifice during the First and Second World Wars. Planned restoration work includes building a new base and relocating the cenotaph to property owned by the municipality.
“I commend the Township of Adelaide Metcalfe for its work in commemorating Canada’s Veterans,” MP Shipley. “This project not only brings the community together, but also restores the community’s sense of pride for its commemorative efforts.”
Applications to the Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program are accepted throughout the year. Non-profit groups and other organizations interested in restoring local memorials may be eligible for funding.
