National Flag Day
February 15th was declared National Flag of Canada Day in 1996. To celebrate this important day in Canadian history, each year the Prime Minister presents the Peace Tower flag to a Canadian who has represented the values our country holds most dear. Today, Prime Minister Harper presented Canadian astronaut Dr. Dave Williams with a Peace Tower flag. In turn, he received from Dr. Williams a Canadian flag that has been to space. Our flag is a symbol of peace, freedom, diversity and the strength of our nation: fly it proudly!

Hire a Veteran Program

If you are an owner or operator of a business in Lambton-Kent-Middlesex, would you be willing to give priority hiring status to an equally qualified Canadian Armed Forces Veteran? Our government is seeking to enhance opportunities for transitioning Veterans to join the civilian workforce. Let us know if you think you could Hire A Veteran.

Helping Local Businesses Hire A Student

Once again this year, the Canada Summer Jobs Program is available to help create summer jobs. Funding is available to not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers and small businesses. Applications must be submitted by February 28th, 2013. Employers can apply on my website, at servicecanada.gc.ca/csj2013 or by calling 1-800-935-5555.

Black History Month

February marks Black History Month. This year we are celebrating, in particular, Canadians in law enforcement, whether they are historic pioneers or today’s leaders. This year marks the 180th anniversary of the British Imperial Act, which basically abolished slavery in the British Colonies, including Upper Canada. (now Ontario) I believe as Canadians it’s important to remember those who came before us and the sacrifices they made to help build the great country we live in today. These inspirational stories remind us that black Canadians have made significant contributions throughout our history, and by recognizing their achievements we are commemorating the heritage of Canadians.

Community Infrastructure Funding

Next week, while I’m in the riding, I will be pleased to make three Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF) announcements. Funding has been approved for improvements to the Strathroy and Area Seniors Centre, to upgrade the Granton Booster Pumping Station and for the Inwood Library Expansion Project. CIIF is part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan 2012, our Government’s multi-faceted plan to aid in creating jobs, growth, and prosperity.

Congratulations to a New Business in the Riding

A new business has opened in Ailsa Craig. Strik-ly Renovations, owned by Brian and Shannon Strik and their partner Mike Salverda from Salverda Siding. You can check out their showroom at 119 Main Street.

Good luck to all of you!
Until next time.
