2006 Holiday Greetings to our Canadians in Afghanistan!
November 17, 2006

Strathroy – Bev Shipley MP for Lambton-Kent-Middlesex is supporting a local effort to bring Christmas greetings to Canadian troops stationed in Afghanistan.

Shipley is teaming up with Chantele Mercer, a Strathroy woman whose husband is currently in Afghanistan, to make sure that Canadians posted in there know they are in our thoughts this holiday season. For Mercer and her 10 year-old son, this will be the first Christmas without his their husband and father, as he will be in the midst of his 13 month post in Afghanistan and is not scheduled to return until March of 2007. This has prompted Mercer to spearhead a letter writing campaign called ‘2006 Holiday Greetings to our Canadians in Afghanistan’, and she is looking for help from students at area schools.

Mercer and Shipley are asking students in the riding to write a greeting or short note that will be forwarded to military bases in Afghanistan. It is hoped that these tokens of kindness will make the upcoming festive season memorable and enjoyable for Canadian troops and civilians who cannot share the holidays with their loved ones.

Mercer approached Shipley with her idea for the campaign and he was enthusiastic about it. “It’s difficult for Canadians to be away from home at Christmas time, and I’m proud to be a part of this effort”, says Shipley and adds “I think that our fellow Canadians will appreciate our words of support as they celebrate the Christmas season away from their families.”

If any members of the community would like to take part in the letter writing campaign, they are asked to compose a short letter, generic in nature so that any soldier or civilian personnel could receive it. Letters can be sent postage free or dropped off in person to one of Bev Shipley’s offices in Wallaceburg or Strathroy, on or before December 4th.
