Statement from Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MP Bev Shipley on the tragic events in Ottawa

Yesterday was a day like no other on Parliament Hill and right across Canada. It was a day when terror reached into the halls of Canadian democracy and shook so many of us to our core. A brave, young, Canadian Reservist, Corporal Nathan Cirillo, killed while standing guard at the one of our most sacred places, the National War Memorial. The incredible first responders who sprang into action in and around the Parliament Buildings to ensure everyone’s safety. A retired RCMP officer-turned-hero, Sergeant-at-arms Kevin Vickers, who’s quick action and bravery likely saved many lives, possibly including mine.

It is hard for me, as it is likely for many of you to understand how people can be filled with so much anger and hate. What a great world this would be if they could only turn that to compassion and respect. But as the Prime Minister stated in his address to the nation last night “we will not be intimdated. Canada will never be intimidated.”

Parliament resumed this morning and the safety and security of all Canadians, including the great people of Lambton-Kent-Middlesex will be in the spotlight like never before. I thank all of you for your calls, emails and messages of support. They mean the world to me. I ask that God will continue to bless you and our great nation of Canada.
